Online Therapy FAQ
After I started my private practice, I quickly realized that online therapy would be a great way to be able to reach more clients in the state of New Jersey as well as internationally. It would allow me to become more accessible to clients who wanted to work with me but due to busy schedules or logistical issues found it difficult to come to my office each week.
I now have some clients who see me exclusively online and others who see me online when it is difficult for them to see me face-to-face or when they would simply prefer to do therapy from the comfort of their own home or another private location of their choosing.
Who is online therapy for?
Online therapy is offered to clients in the state of NJ and internationally. Unfortunately, state licensing regulations do not allow me to conduct online therapy in other states.
Online therapy is great for anyone who travels a lot for work or finds it logistically difficult to get to my office regularly. It’s also great for anyone who feels more comfortable opening up in their own environment.
Clients who choose online therapy find it a simple and convenient way to work with me without having to worry about commuting to my office. I also have clients who love the convenience of being able to do therapy at work in their private office.
What type of technology do I need?
I use a HIPAA compliant platform called VSee, which is free and easy to use. It works similarly to Skype or Facetime but is encrypted to protect your privacy. I will send you a link to the program and you download it to your phone or computer. When it’s time for our session, I will call you on VSee.
You will need:
A smartphone or computer with a working microphone and camera
A reliable internet connection
A private, safe place to talk without interruptions
Does online therapy work as well as in-person therapy?
There is a good deal of research that shows online therapy has similar outcomes in terms of client satisfaction and self-reported decrease in symptoms and personal growth as in-person therapy. My experience using online therapy with my clients has been consistent with the research and I see my online clients have the same life-changing positive benefits as my in-person clients.
I have received special training to be sure that I follow best practices when it comes to online therapy.
Do my insurance benefits cover online therapy?
State legislation in NJ has required that all insurance companies cover online therapy for mental health at the same rate of payment they do for in-person therapy. I have found that most in-network and out-of-network benefits do cover this service. However, individual plans can still vary and not all companies are currently complaint with this legislation, so I always recommend you call your insurance company directly to find out what will be covered.
